What is wellness care and why is it important? We often hear, “My pet hasn’t been sick, so why should we see the veterinarian?” In human medicine we realize the importance of annual medical exams, when we are screened for high blood pressure, heart disease and cholesterol. The doctor discusses lifestyle with us and helps us make changes that will improve our health and quality of life. It is the same with our pets, especially since our pets can’t tell us when they aren’t feeling well or have problems.
As veterinarians it is our job to help keep your pet healthy, not to just treat them when they are sick. We will work with you to educate you about common diseases and conditions, nutrition and weight management, dental care, allergies, and aging issues such as arthritis. There is so much that can be done to improve our pets’ health and quality of life.
During the first third of your pet’s life we recommend annual exams. Annual blood screening is recommended for heartworm and tick-borne illnesses, as well as periodic health screening for blood and organ function. Again, our pets can’t always tell us they have a problem. As your pets age, more frequent exams and health screens are recommended.
